Chalk up another injury

Perhaps it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Casey Janssen has hit the 15-day disabled list with “inflammation in his throwing shoulder.” After all, injuries to pitchers have been aplenty for the Blue Jays this year. As a result of this most recent injury, the Jays have called up Brad Mills from Triple-A Las Vegas to make Thursday’s start against the Phillies.

Mills, the second-highest Jays pitching prospect (as ranked by Baseball America), has been inconsistent this season in the Minors. In 13 starts, the 24-year-old has gone 1-8 with a 4.48 ERA. Opponents are hitting .277 against the left-hander, and he’s issued 34 walks compared to 65 strikeouts.

He enjoyed a spectacular outing June 7, however, working 7.0 scoreless innings against Tacoma while giving up just four hits and striking out a season-high 11. But that start was followed by a subpar one four days ago. Pitching in Colorado Springs, Mills gave up five runs on six hits and four walks over 6.0 innings in a loss.

Mills will be the 11th different starting pitcher for the Jays this season, and the fifth different rookie hurler to make a start for Toronto.

they say the PCL is a hitter’s league, so the opponent’s BAA and the ERA isn’t surprising (according to scouts), but he’s supposed to be a guy who throws strikes, so the # of walks can’t be something they expected…

either way, excited to see this play out…i wonder if cecil takes halladay’s spot on saturday, since that would’ve been his turn in vegas anyways…

Look like it will be Cecil. That will make four left-handers in a row if I’m not mistaken. I wonder what the record is …
