Up and Adam

Is Adam Lind ready for his third full season with the Blue Jays? I think so.

The 25-year-old was an offensive star Monday night, going 4-for-5 with a three-run homer, a career-high 6 RBIs and a pair of runs scored to lead the Toronto Blue Jays to a season-opening 12-5 win over the visiting Detroit Tigers at Rogers Centre.lind

But he wasn’t the only left-handed stick on fire on Monday. Rookie Travis Snider also had an impressive 2009 debut, going 2-for-4 with an opposite-field home run while hitting out of the No. 9 spot.

Veterans Vernon Wells and Alex Rios also started the season on a high note, combining for four hits and five runs scored during the Jays’ lopsided win.

Roy Halladay brought his usual ‘A’ game – even if he allowed a four-spot in the seventh inning to bring the Tigers within four runs at 9-5. The right-hander allowed just six hits in 7.0 innings of work for the victory.

And for now, the Blue Jays are perfect. For all the talk about its young squad and rebuilding ways, the Toronto ball club looked pretty solid on this night. Pretty solid, indeed.

Quick hits: The Canadian maple leaf is a nice addition to the Jays’ uniforms and, as Sportsnet’s Pat Tabler pointed out, long overdue … How exciting was it to see Cito Gaston back for an Opening Day in the Blue Jays dugout and to see Paul Beeston active behind the scenes in the Rogers Centre suites. You can’t help but be taken back to the glory years with that dynamic duo. All we need is Pat Gillick.
